Our Partners

We aim to partner with academic institutions in Switzerland that are committed to supporting women who are looking to access transformative experiences through higher education in the fields of leadership, biosciences, medicine and technology. Currently, BackPack offers scholarships in collaboration with two partners:  IMD and Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute.

If you represent a Swiss-based academic institution and interested in hosting a BackPack scholar in one of these areas or an international organization in contact with women that fulfill our selection criteria and are looking for sources of financing to realize their visions, please contact us. We are interested in exploring how we can work together to promote highly talented women.

Belen worked closely with the Board in designing BackPack's corporate identity. Belen associates BackPack to knowledge and wisdom and found inspiration in earthy colors. Her work is a reflection a permanent state of curiosity, as from early age she found her passion in biodiversity and art. She considers BackPack’s vision is close to her heart and important for women empowerment. In her words: “I would have liked to have the chance of havng access to the kind of support the foundation offers when I was a student in Ecuador, I am happy to contribute with my work in this website for others to further build on their talent accessing to a whole new world”

I studied architecture in Sudan, yet I always had a profound interest in social entrepreneurship and pursued a career in that field. I spent 7 years strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem in my region before becoming an entrepreneur myself. I started my own social tech enterprise that focuses on providing technical solutions while creating jobs for people who don't have easy access to the workforce, especially women and people with disabilities.

Along these years, I developed skills in leadership, collaboration, and inclusion as well as recognizing the profound impact of giving back to a community that played a pivotal role in shaping my identity and my career. Pursuing an MBA has always been a goal, I am convinced it will help me achieve my long-term career aspirations and position me as the leader I aspire to be. I’m truly grateful of being awarded the BackPack Excellence Scholarship for Women as the foundation's values reflect the principles that have guided me in my career. I am keenly excited to contribute to the backpack community in a way that mirrors the generous support it has extended to me.

As I am beginning this transformative journey, the path to it had a lot of challenges, and that's why the symbolism of a “Backpack” resonates with me profoundly. It’s the only thing I had when I fled my home country earlier this year due to war. Also, it will be the metaphorical vessel that will carry the wealth of knowledge, experiences, and networks during my journey at IMD next year, all made possible by the unwavering support of the foundation.

As a mechanical engineer, I have had to quickly learn how to be bold in an environment that is traditionally more masculine. Working as a field professional in the oil and gas industry and as a maintenance manager in a factory running H24/J7, I learned the importance of a sense of responsibility for my team safety and how to link achievement of team goals to company objectives.

I applied for the BackPack IMD Excellence Scholarship for Women for a few reasons. One, I was facing challenges to get the required fees to fund my studies, and this came out as a great opportunity to cater to this purpose. Second, I saw it as an opportunity to be part of a supporting community during my year at IMD and post my MBA. Lastly, I wanted to be part of a community that would in the future would allow me to give back and contribute to other women who will need support to grow in their careers and access higher education which they may not afford on their own.

Through this, I also learned the importance of focus and discipline in execution, attention to details and perseverance. Some days are good, others are bad, but I never give up and keep learning from my mistakes. I learn to understand my environment and be flexible enough to adapt to it without changing my core values.

A BackPack is a bag we frequently use to put in our books and class material for study or other purposes. The BackPack Foundation for me is associated with a foundation that helps the winner with the financial resources missing in her bag or pack to pursue a long-term dream.

Growing up in an internally displaced family of 15 living in the IDP camp of Teso, Uganda—where nobody believed in me—was the greatest challenge in my education. I have carried my backpack as the sole provider for my son, younger siblings, and parents. As such, my responsibilities wouldn't have allowed me the opportunity to further my education. Nevertheless, my everlasting wish has always been to reach greater heights and prove to the world that being a woman is never a limitation to career growth and leadership.

Back in my country Uganda, I work as a midwife leader, coordinating the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, as well as Young Adolescents and Peer Support, where I mentor and empower young people with sexuality education and HIV preventive measures.

The Backpack Foundation is a beacon of opportunity for women like me. Your trust has restored my confidence, made me part of a family, and ignited in me a greater purpose to serve, lead, and inspire change in the health sector. Your support—carrying my backpack—and your commitment to empowering women like me is creating ripples of positive impact, and I am proud to be one of the many lives the foundation has touched.

I am committed to using this knowledge to strengthen health service delivery, advocate for equity for women, and improve the well-being of vulnerable populations. I am convinced that the knowledge acquired from Swiss TPH will have a great impact on my entire family, community, and workplace. As a proud scholar, I will live to emulate this kindness, empower other young women who are less privileged like me, and continue to thrive and inspire countless others.

As a young professional Ghanaian woman, I had a dream to be a change-maker in my career. I saw myself as a woman focused on gaining knowledge to help solve the problems in my community—using women as catalysts for change—with the hope of creating a global impact.

Throughout my life, I have always challenged myself to seek the necessary professional training to sustain my passion and achieve that goal. The Backpack Foundation has provided me with that opportunity, which I gratefully acknowledge.

In addition to working in nursing and midwifery for decades—providing maternal and child healthcare in my country—I have carried my own backpack and supported many women in carrying theirs.

I currently serve as a researcher at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, engaging in translational research to solve health problems. As a public health professional, I am committed to improving women's health, particularly through the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS and the promotion of respectful maternity care. My goals include ensuring safe, supervised deliveries and improving access to reproductive health services—especially for special groups like adolescents—while also leading community engagement initiatives to build the capacity of young health professionals.

Backpack’s holistic support has had a tremendous impact on my ability to help others. The Swiss TPH experience has given me essential knowledge and skills in global health—from research to the implementation of health projects. I am committed to using this experience to give back to my community and mentor other young professionals, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the health of citizens in Ghana and beyond.

The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, education and services at local, national and international level. 950 staff and students from 95 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on climate change, environment and health, infectious and non-communicable diseases, societal and cultural context, and health systems and policies.

The backbone of a functioning health system is the people who work every day for people's health and well-being, including nurses and doctors, policy makers, financial experts and community health workers. However, there is a severe shortage of well-trained health workers in many places, especially in low- and middle-income countries impairing quality of care and public health outcomes.

Through the diploma course "Health Care and Management: From Research to Implementation" (DAS HCM), Swiss TPH each year trains international health professionals who are working at the forefront of their national health systems. The course provides them with the core knowledge and competencies for understanding and reacting to today's complex health challenges and with communication, leadership and management skills such as systemic problem analysis, solution-oriented thinking and critical reflection.

Scholarships are an important tool to ensure that our knowledge and expertise is disseminated through education and training in order to address the most pressing global challenges. The Backpack Foundation's contribution to the Swiss TPH Scholarship Fund is aimed at talented women from resource-constrained countries to multiply their impact upon return to their countries, organisations, communities and to make a difference.
