A BackPack is a wonderful representation of our individual life journeys. It is a wonderful tool in everyday activities and when out in nature. The name of the foundation reflects my personal purpose statement: “for those who choose to: I want to support them along their journey in filling their BackPack with development and inspiration, and when they need it, take weight of their BackPack”. Fun fact: I have 3 times as many BackPacks as handbags, in all sizes and for all occasions.
My choice of studying business administration was because I didn’t know what profession I would thrive in, and business seemed broad, and it kept my options open. I developed and trained my leadership skills as a young troop leader in the scouts. Through my MBA discovered that I had a strategic mind, an entrepreneurial drive, and the ability to synthesize. The MBA gave me the self-confidence to pursue a career with ambitious companies, and later to build a global management consulting firm with a disruptive business model. As an extrovert, I enjoy teamwork, foster an inclusive environment, and joint problem solving. I continuously fill my BackPack, remain independent and curious, which has allowed me to be associated with some of the finest companies and work alongside outstanding individuals.
I was fortunate that my parents believed in education, and my father made enough money to pay for my studies abroad, and for me to start my career debt free. I take enormous pleasure in seeing young talent thrive and drive, and I have confidence that the BackPack Foundation can make a difference to somebody who cares to dare, who wants to share and always is fair.
I associate two different aspects with the word “backpack";. On the one hand, I associate it with the fact that one needs a backpack for traveling, meaning the travel of life. Hence, people and women worldwide should have access to training/additional education and can thus acquire and build a backpack for their own life.
On the other hand, I associate it with the fact that everyone already has their own backpack, i.e. everyone carries their previous experiences with them and can share them with others to their benefit.
Through my studies in law, I was able to build up sound knowledge for many different relevant areas of life and thus deepen my knowledge of social problems in connection with law. My interest in people and their legal problems, and my urge to help people, has deepened through my studies. That's why I'm now working in an area of law in which the focus is on people and I can help people through my work to help plan and shape their lives
On the one hand, I can live out my desire to help people and stand by them by supporting other women with my work in the foundation, so they all have the same opportunities and access to higher education, regardless of whether their financial or personal situation otherwise makes it difficult.
On the other hand, it is an enrichment for me to exchange ideas, thoughts and concepts with the members of the foundation and thereby learn something new by expanding my backpack with great experiences.
The name of the foundation is close to my heart. It was a backpack (both material and emotional) what I carried when I left my home country almost 30 years ago. A backpack that friends, family, colleagues and mentors helped me carry along as it became fuller and sometimes heavier. Today, one of my most important goals is to help my daughter, who came in my life when she was 15, to carry her own backpack as she embarks in new academic and professional challenges.
With no doubt, my education has provided me with content and a network, but it is more the journey that I started in pursue of an academic career that has shaped who I am and my professional career. It taught me the importance of grabbing opportunities that sometimes, implied personal sacrifices. It allowed me to cross paths with people who I learned from and who became relevant not only in my professional, but my personal life. And above all, it gave me the privilege develop my own way of leading and having impact, projecting in others all the learnings of this journey and continuing to grow as I do it.
I am thrilled of being part of the Board of BackPack and the possibility it offers me to support many more journeys. BackPack is an opportunity to learn, to give back and to have fun working with people who I share values and objectives with. Can’t wait to meet the candidates that BackPack will find on the path we have started to build.
Around the world, students fill backpacks with all they need to attend school. Their journeys to school may only be a few meters or many, many miles and backpacks carry the things students will need to succeed in learning – for example, books, pencils, snacks, computers. To me, a backpack symbolizes the ability to fully participate in educational opportunities.
I pursued a technical degree in biochemistry at a university which also encouraged an array of additional classes to create a broad base of learning. This led me to study medicine grounded in a deep understanding of science but also a curiosity in areas like social justice, policy, economics and business. Through the generosity of a donor, I was also able to pursue a second advanced degree in public policy with a focus on international development. The degree program I was in encouraged practical exploration and it was this time and my combined degree background that became the springboard of my professional career. Over the past 20 years, I have had the privilege to work in medicine, global health, biotechnology, consulting, and philanthropy across geographies.
My education has truly shaped my path. I am energized and excited about the opportunity to help other women pursue their educational dreams, develop skills to excel in their fields, and support others along the way. It is an honor to be serving on the board of BackPack.
Growing up in an internally displaced family of 15 living in the IDP camp of Teso, Uganda—where nobody believed in me—was the greatest challenge in my education. I have carried my backpack as the sole provider for my son, younger siblings, and parents. As such, my responsibilities wouldn't have allowed me the opportunity to further my education. Nevertheless, my everlasting wish has always been to reach greater heights and prove to the world that being a woman is never a limitation to career growth and leadership.
Back in my country Uganda, I work as a midwife leader, coordinating the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, as well as Young Adolescents and Peer Support, where I mentor and empower young people with sexuality education and HIV preventive measures.
The Backpack Foundation is a beacon of opportunity for women like me. Your trust has restored my confidence, made me part of a family, and ignited in me a greater purpose to serve, lead, and inspire change in the health sector. Your support—carrying my backpack—and your commitment to empowering women like me is creating ripples of positive impact, and I am proud to be one of the many lives the foundation has touched.
I am committed to using this knowledge to strengthen health service delivery, advocate for equity for women, and improve the well-being of vulnerable populations. I am convinced that the knowledge acquired from Swiss TPH will have a great impact on my entire family, community, and workplace. As a proud scholar, I will live to emulate this kindness, empower other young women who are less privileged like me, and continue to thrive and inspire countless others.
As a young professional Ghanaian woman, I had a dream to be a change-maker in my career. I saw myself as a woman focused on gaining knowledge to help solve the problems in my community—using women as catalysts for change—with the hope of creating a global impact.
Throughout my life, I have always challenged myself to seek the necessary professional training to sustain my passion and achieve that goal. The Backpack Foundation has provided me with that opportunity, which I gratefully acknowledge.
In addition to working in nursing and midwifery for decades—providing maternal and child healthcare in my country—I have carried my own backpack and supported many women in carrying theirs.
I currently serve as a researcher at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, engaging in translational research to solve health problems. As a public health professional, I am committed to improving women's health, particularly through the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS and the promotion of respectful maternity care. My goals include ensuring safe, supervised deliveries and improving access to reproductive health services—especially for special groups like adolescents—while also leading community engagement initiatives to build the capacity of young health professionals.
Backpack’s holistic support has had a tremendous impact on my ability to help others. The Swiss TPH experience has given me essential knowledge and skills in global health—from research to the implementation of health projects. I am committed to using this experience to give back to my community and mentor other young professionals, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the health of citizens in Ghana and beyond.
The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, education and services at local, national and international level. 950 staff and students from 95 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on climate change, environment and health, infectious and non-communicable diseases, societal and cultural context, and health systems and policies.
The backbone of a functioning health system is the people who work every day for people's health and well-being, including nurses and doctors, policy makers, financial experts and community health workers. However, there is a severe shortage of well-trained health workers in many places, especially in low- and middle-income countries impairing quality of care and public health outcomes.
Through the diploma course "Health Care and Management: From Research to Implementation" (DAS HCM), Swiss TPH each year trains international health professionals who are working at the forefront of their national health systems. The course provides them with the core knowledge and competencies for understanding and reacting to today's complex health challenges and with communication, leadership and management skills such as systemic problem analysis, solution-oriented thinking and critical reflection.
Scholarships are an important tool to ensure that our knowledge and expertise is disseminated through education and training in order to address the most pressing global challenges. The Backpack Foundation's contribution to the Swiss TPH Scholarship Fund is aimed at talented women from resource-constrained countries to multiply their impact upon return to their countries, organisations, communities and to make a difference.
